Well, what an interesting night last night - my first chance to debate against Lembit, Glyn and David Rowlands from UKIP. Oh, and Mick Bates. No Labour interestingly enough. We'd all been invited to speak at a meeting of One Voice Wales in Llansantffraid on the issue on wind farms. So a contentious topic to staer with!
Must say, I loved every second and can't wait for all the panel debates and discussions once the election is called. It was interesting to spot everyone's weakspots so I'll be even more prepared for next time.
As for everyone, (I won't comment on Mick Bates as he's not running in the General Election) Lembit came across as being quite clueless and seemed genuienly confused by some questions, especially relating to the IPC. He kept saying that he was looking things and would know more in the future. Surely, having been an MP for Montgomeryshire where wind farms has consistently been an issue, he should know all of this by now? Hmmm... Not impressive.
Glyn - pretty neutral, middle of the road. Paraphrased the good points others had made and very much a crowd pleaser. Comes across as being authorative and sensible - so very much a typical politician.
David Rowlands - old fashioned, traditional, knowledgable on some things, not on others. Completely at odds with me on everything, as you'd probably expect. Wanted Westminster to decide everything, I want decisions taken in Wales and so on..
Me - well difficult to tell but I certainly didn't feel in an way out of my depth, and felt I got enough punches in and offered some genuine viewpoints and ideas for people to consider. Had a fantastic reaction at the end anyway, and got the last word in, which is always fun.
As Glyn mentions on his blog, Lembit did mention Ieuan Wyn Jones's view regarding Wylfa when I was stating my opposition to Nuclear. Its my party's policy to oppose nuclear, so I find that kind of petty point scoring quite pathetic. And though Glyn called it a cheap reference on his blog, implying that he'd never do such a thing, he's still put it on his blog which will have more readers than the number of people who were there last night. And Glyn, if you're reading, don't worry in future about not calling me up on such things - I'd rather you do it during a debate than on a blog. At least then I can respond! And don't worry, I'm more than able to take it - no need to worry about it!
What is clear though from the debate is that we need to address the issue of wind farms and renewable energy once and for all. Personally, I'm in favour of them, but there has to be restrictions and Montgomeryshire can't simply becoming a dumping ground for them. There has to be limits.
Personally, I'd welcome some small local wind farms such as Carno and Tirgwynt. But not the huge ones. Hand in hand with these, rural roads must be strengthened and we should consider, as was suggested last night, if these turbines can be built in Wales, thus providing much needed jobs and ensuring less emissions when transporting them.
I will during the election be presenting the electorate with my vision for the future of Montgomeryshire. I won't play it safe, and simply tell them the obvious - I will offer a real alternative and hope it appeals. One thing's for sure - I'm definitely very different from all the other candidates, and no, it's not just because I'm female.
I'll leave you with this picture of a leaflet that's been sent to every voter in Montgomeryshire. Made me laugh that they think they have to go to such lengths. Don't quite understand the logic of vote Plaid, get Tory. Actually flattered that Lembit's worried about the number of votes I'm going to steal from him!
